Credit Card Consolidation-Making Life Simpler?

August 10, 2008 · Filed Under Credit Counseling, Credit Repair, Everything Credit

When consumers have mounting debt on their hands and interest rates keep rising, some look towards finding ways to consolidate their credit card bills. If you are a consumer that falls into this category, Creditreportblog.com recommends that now is the time for you to consider transferring high-interest balances to 0% or low interest cards.

When looking towards doing balance transfers, shop for the lowest interest rate, not the lowest payment. Some companies that offer lower monthly payments are just stretching out your repayment, which ends up just costing more in the long run. Although many credit card companies offer this option to transfer balances, you should read the fine print so that you know exactly what the terms are and what costs they may incur if you choose to balance transfer.

Also, don’t just focus on the lowest APR charged on the credit card, and ignore the initial balance transfer fees, annual fees, late fees and any other extra costs associated with the new card.  Another thing you want to do is figure out what the final rate will be once the time expires for the initial “teaser offer”. You probably won’t have the debt paid off by the time this initial period ends, so you’ll want to know how much you will be paying after that.

Creditreportblog.com recommends looking for cards without universal default. This is a new provision that credit card companies have starting adding under their terms and conditions. It basically means creditors can review your credit report on a regular basis, and if they see any negative change in your credit score, they can start charging you a new higher interest rate. Things that can cause the universal default provision to kick in is being late on any payment, going over a credit card limit, carrying too much debt, and other financial don’ts.

If you do your research on a credit card, and find out all the information you need before signing up, then credit card consolidation can be a good solution to lowering your monthly payments. Just take time and investigate all the facts.
