Credit Card Debt – ‘Til Death Do Us Part
There are a lot of things you can’t take with you when you die, and in the case of credit card debt, it can be a good thing. However, this can change depending on where you live and whose names the credit card is under. Of course, the simplest scenario is that the credit card was on your name alone, with no joint account holders. In this case, any debt owed on the card, after death, would belong to only you and no one would inherit it.

The Major Credit Bureaus
The 3 major credit bureaus are Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. These companies collect financial information from various creditors and sell this information in the form of credit reports to lenders or others who have a legitimate use for it. Each individual has a right to see what is contained in their credit report at the various credit bureaus. Individuals are entitled to receive one FREE copy of their credit report from each bureau, once every 12 months. The information contained in the credit reports may be as follows:
· Individual’s full name, address, place of employment, and spouse’s name, if married.

Reasons to Check Your Credit Report
Most people don’t check their credit report until it is time to make a purchase that requires a degree of creditworthiness, i.e. buying a house or a car, opening up a credit card, etc.
Credit Report Blog.com would like to take this opportunity to reinforce to its readers the importance of consistently checking their credit reports for various reasons, as mentioned in this report. When an important decision is to be based on your credit report, it may cause unforeseen delays or rejections, if surprises pop up on your credit report which you were not expecting. The causes of these surprises could be the result of identity theft, reporting errors, mistaken names, etc.

3 bureaus’ credit scores can be widely varied
Most lenders look at a consumer’s credit scores to decide whether to grant a loan and how much to charge. Consumers can buy a report on their credit scores, but these scores vary — sometimes widely. “There is a pervasive myth that there is one credit score,” said Rod Griffin of Experian.
CreditReportBlog.com advises that everyone get a copy of their FREE credit report from each of the 3 credit bureaus. Although most of the time the information should not be too different on all the credit reports, your credit score may vary somewhat depending on few bits of info that one credit bureau may or may not have. Before applying for any type of loan, a consumer should be aware of where they stand, in terms of their credit score. Read more

College Students-In Debt already?
While in college, students are constantly hounded by credit card companies enticing them to apply for their credit card. Students see applying for credit cards as a great way to start building credit. However, if you are not careful with the way you start charging things, you may end up in a whole heap of debt. With not enough income coming in, usually a part-time job, many students end up spending well above their means. If you are a student and are looking at some of the credit card offers out there, here are some things you may want to think about before signing up:

Everyone should take advantage of their right to obtain a FREE credit report for themselves, every 12 months from each of the three credit bureaus. This is the only way you can monitor your own credit file, without paying high fees to a credit monitoring service. Although the FREE credit report will not include a credit score, it will let you view any negative information included in your file. Looking for a job? Clean up your credit report.
Julie Lawrence interviewed for a job in March. Lawrence believed the company was going to make her an offer after a background check. She was unaware that included a credit check.
CreditReportBlog.com would like to advise its readers of the importance of maintaining a clean credit report for so many reasons, other than the obvious. Not only are lenders looking at your credit reports, but these days other parties that you would not have thought of, are also peering into your credit records.

Settlement results in free credit monitoring service
You can sign up today to receive free credit monitoring services from the credit bureau TransUnion due to a settlement the company reached on a class-action lawsuit.
Credit Report Blog.com would like to advise all consumers that a settlement has been reached in the class-action lawsuit filed against TransUnion Credit Bureau. The lawsuit was filed because TransUnion irresponsibly sold customer information in the form of marketing lists to other businesses. TransUnion denied any wrongdoing, while at the same time, stating that they had stopped the practice as far back as 2001.

Experts say consumers can minimize fraud risk
One of the surest ways to protect against new account fraud is to place a security freeze on credit reports, which consumers can do for a one-time fee of about $10 to each of the three major credit reporting agencies, according to Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy for the San Diego-based Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group on privacy rights.

***Credit Report Blog*** At first read, placing a “security freeze” on your credit reports seems like an ideal way to go to prevent identity theft. However, it must be mentioned how inconvenient this can be in your daily financial matters.

How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Identity Theft: Interview with Jeremy Duffy
“With the recent news about the CEO of LifeLock having his identity stolen, I looked around the web searching for ways we could prevent ourselves from becoming a victim without having to pay monthly or annual fees.”
***Credit Report Blog*** Jeremy is absolutely on the right track with this issue. Why pay for a service that you really don’t need, provided you are willing to invest some time and effort yourself? With a little diligence, every consumer can do exactly what the monitoring service companies do, without paying the monthly fees for their services. They don’t really “stop” identity theft as they claim; they just let you know once it has occurred. If that’s all you want, monitor your credit report yourself for inaccuracies and changes unfamiliar to you.

TransUnion settlement makes services available to consumers
“Credit Bureau TransUnion’s recent settlement of a class-action suit offers several options for consumers, two of which include free credit-monitoring services for a limited time.”
***Creditreportblog.com*** So TransUnion is basically offering consumers options that are already available to them in some form or another in return for selling private consumer data to businesses. We say, take what they are offering while it’s free, but don’t let them persuade you into extending any of the options. Every consumer is already entitled to a free credit report from all 3 credit bureaus once per calendar year. If you look at it, the damage is already done. Your private information is already out there and now that TransUnion got caught, they want to make nice and say they have stopped the practice and will give you some valuable free services in return for privacy. Looks like, just another case where a big organization got caught and wants to make it all disappear by making the consumer feel like they’re getting the better end.

Credit Monitoring Services - Wasting your money?
When you listen to ads pitching credit monitoring services, the top benefit they usually mention is to protect you from identity theft. Not true! These credit monitoring services do not really do anything to prevent identity theft. If anything, they may be able to alert you, once the crime has been committed. In addition, you will only receive these alerts on any credit-related activity, if certain conditions are first met. What’s more, these services can be very expensive. Why spend unnecessary dollars when you are entitled to a FREE credit report once a year? You can also receive it FREE if you are denied a line of credit, denied employment, or become victim of identity theft.
